Should Virus Warning Emails be Forwarded? April 7, 2008

While the willingness to let others know about a potential computer security threat is commendable, forwarding a “virus warning” email may not be the best way to approach the issue. Like other email forwards, they tend to mutate as they travel from inbox to inbox. Even if the original message was accurate, ongoing modifications can mean that the information can quite quickly lose its relevance. The perceived danger can be significantly exaggerated and important details can become false or misleading. Also, such messages often continue to circulate for months or even years after the described threat has subsided.
The Current one circulating the net is called the “Life is beautiful Hoax. This hoax started circulating in early 2002 and it has been passed around ever since. In spite of a great deal of online exposure, the hoax tends to resurge from time to time and its rate of circulation increases dramatically for a few months. As hoax emails go, this is one of the most “successful”. Perhaps because of the apparent destructiveness of the “virus” and the urgent tone of the warning, people are apt to forward the message without much forethought. Like many other hoaxes, it capitalizes on the recipient’s desire to help other Internet users by warning them of a perceived threat. — from Internet Tip of the Day

IE 8 Beta first peek March 6, 2008

by virtue of having a VM XP machine, I installed the IE 8 Beta (hey, I have to peek sometimes) and the thumbnail will show you the first screen that appears in a successful installation. After following the prompts, I chose the custom setting, you’ll see this screen for a successful install. 
More on this later, since it’s only a Beta now, DO NOT INSTALL on your workstation, it overwrites the IE7 that I had already. There are 5 different downloads, be sure to get the right one when you install (thank God for vmware workstation and my XP ‘test’ machine)

Help Renewing Your Domain Name February 8, 2008

If you do not set your domain to automatically renew, you must manually renew it through the Domain Manager. You can also manually renew your domain to extend the length of your domain’s registration.
To Renew Your Domain Name
1. Log in to your Account Manager.
2. In the My Products section, click Manage Domains.
3. Select the domain name(s) that you want to renew.
4. From the Renew menu, select Renew Domain.
5. From the Renewal Length list, select the length of time for which you want to renew your domain.
6. Click Next.
7. To privately register the domain, select Private Registration, and then click Next and complete the instructions.
8. Continue through the checkout process.

Keywords in URLs
We were also asked if it is useful to have relevant keywords in URLs. It’s always a good idea to be descriptive across your site, with titles, ALT attributes, and yes, even URLs, as they can be useful signals for users and search engines. This can be especially true with image files, which otherwise may not have any text for a search engine to consider. Imagine you’ve taken a picture of your cat asleep on the sofa. Your digital camera will likely name it something like IMG_2937.jpg. Not exactly the most descriptive name. So unless your cat really looks like an IMG_2937, consider changing the filename to something more relevant, like adorable-kitten.jpg. And, if you have a post about your favorite cat names, it’s much easier to guess that a URL ending in my-favorite-cat-names would be the relevant page, rather than a URL ending in postid=8652.
